Who’s Afraid of a Big Bad Hacking Story?

It’s been a cheerily good spring for FOSS fans here in the Linux blogosphere, so we may perhaps be forgiven for our utter shock and disbelief at the affront recently committed against us by a certain brick-and-mortar purveyor of books and magazines. Barnes & Noble yanked the very excellent Linux Format magazine from its U.S. shelves — apparently because of a cover story on the topic of “hacking.”

HTC ‘Golf’ sighted in the flesh, rumored to resurrect ‘Desire’ branding

Android Central

We first saw the HTC "Golf" in a leaked press image last month, along with a rumored name and spec list. Purportedly, the device would go to market as the HTC Wildfire C, with a 3.5-inch HVGA screen, 4GB storage, a 5MP camera, ICS and HTC Sense 4. Today we have what seems to be the first photos of the phone in the flesh, along with news of a possible change in name.

According to ITProPortal, which has obtained a couple of real-world photos of the device, its eventual name will be the HTC Desire C, a decision which if true will see HTC resurrecting the Desire brand for this entry-level product. Besides that, the specs and design mostly match up with what we'd already heard, pointing to a solid budget contender, but nothing to excite serious smartphone nerds.

We'd expect to see the Golf, or Desire C, or whatever it's called in Europe and Asia later in the year, and perhaps on one or two regional carriers in the U.S, too.

New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It’s called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It’ll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder — and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

balance

Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is “above” the windows. It doesn’t push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid – and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It’s a very tricky game – one I wouldn’t recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.

Rovio marks one billion downloads, untold pig casualties across Angry Birds games

Yeah, yeah, we all knew that Rovio was doing gangbusters with Angry Birds series, but here’s a little number to put it all into perspective: one billion. That’s how many times the slingshotting birds have been downloaded, when you add up all of the titles and all of the platforms. Naturally, the company made a video to celebrate the accomplishment. You can find it after the break.

Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash “path” game

linegrapefruit

Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That’s you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won’t sit still – they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That’s what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that’s not all – you’re also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the “path” (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line – once you’ve made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you’ve made.

This is not an easy game, but it’s quite unique – I can’t recall seeing another game quite like it.

Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men

The social network Cloud Girlfriend
Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn’t really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch ‘soon,’ and there’s no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline ‘The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,’ Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it’s all about fulfilling Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. “CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow’s higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship.”

Our concern, of course, is that it’s very nearly April 1. We’re also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we’ve grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage — or overage — or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you’d never know.

Let’s not forget this is the Internet we’re talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as… your dad, perhaps?

AT&T small cell site pilot due between late 2012, 2013

Samsung Galaxy Note ATT white

AT&T has been hinting for a while that it’s getting closer to implementing small cell sites in its network, and at CTIA Wireless 2012 gave a stronger clue as to when and how the mini network hubs will operate. Executive technology VP John Donovan clarified to Reuters that a pilot is expected to start late this year and should run into 2013. If all runs smoothly, the below-tower-sized sites will be clipping on to lamp posts and other parts of the urban landscape to strengthen coverage in places where wide-area WiFi alone won’t do. While Donovan didn’t venture deep into the infrastructure at the trade show, Cisco had previously said that AT&T would be using sites incorporating 2G, 3G, 4G and WiFi when the provider did start experimenting with small cells. If so, there’s a chance subscribers could get AT&T WiFi without having to turn to an airport, landmark or coffee shop.

Apple mods nano-SIM design, awaits Nokia’s tiny rebuttal

Apple mods nano-SIM design, awaits Nokia's tiny rebuttalApple and Nokia agree that a smaller SIM card will aid them in their quest to create better phones for us all, but the two disagree about what that new SIM should look like. You see, Nokia claims that Cupertino’s proposed card violates ETSI’s — the standards body that’ll make the final call on the one nano-SIM to rule them all — requirement that the nano-SIM design preclude people from fitting it into a microSD slot. Well, that complaint didn’t fall upon deaf ears, as Apple apparently put SIM maker Giesecke & Devrient to work making a new version that solves the problem with some additional plastic in all the right places. Of course, this new design doesn’t address Nokia’s claims that its design is technically superior, so it’s unlikely to win approval from its Finnish opponents. While Apple’s new nano-SIM seems to eliminate one hurdle in its way, RIM’s accusation that Apple’s attempt to rig ETSI’s decision in its favor has yet to be dealt with. That means it’ll be a bit before we know if Cupertino’s plan for nano-SIM domination will succeed. Stay tuned.

Google Makes Its Google+ Notifications In Gmail More Interactive

gplus_logoEmail is typically static. Because of security concerns, virtually none of the standard web-based and desktop email clients let you run JavaScript code in an HTML email, for example. Microsoft’s Hotmail made a small push in this direction in 2010, when it started whitelisting emails from a few trusted third-parties, including Orbitz, Netflix and LinkedIn. Now, it looks like Google is also moving in this directions – at least for emails from its own products. Starting today, Google+ notifications in Gmail will become a bit more interactive.

GeekDad Puzzle of the Week: Another Coffee Conundrum

Caffeine source. Image: Flickr/Mararie cc licenseI’m at a conference in Portland, Oregon. That means free, good coffee and lots of it. In fact, it seems there’s a limitless supply of immediately available, dark black coffee. And I would happily drink cup after cup of said coffee, maybe with just a splash of half and half each time. But I know from experience that if I do, I’ll soon be lying on the floor, catatonic but for my twitching eyeballs and very quiet, high-pitched whine, which I truly believe to be a direct product of my brain without involvement from my vocal chords.

Hands-on with Kyocera Hydro, a waterproof Android 4.0 smartphone (video)

Hands-on with Kyocera Hydro, a waterproof Android 4.0 smartphone (video)

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Kyocera smartphone for the US market, and if you’ll recall, its previous two attempts — the Milano and Echo — didn’t manage to sway many consumers. Today, the company is adding two new Android handsets to the deck: the Hydro and Rise. True to its name, the Hydro plays off of Kyocera’s experience in the waterproof segment, and while it’s not mil-spec, the phone’s able to withstand submersion at depths of up to one meter for a half-hour. The Hydro is a CDMA handset, although Kyocera is keeping the carrier close to its chest.

The Hydro will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, and we’re pleased to report that the interface is largely unmolested, save for Kyocera’s app to conserve battery life — whether the carrier dictates future changes remains to be seen. Beyond the OS and the waterproof aspect, however, it’s rather humdrum in the spec department. It features a Qualcomm MSM8655 SoC with a 1GHz CPU, a 3.5-inch, 480 x 320 display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash and a 1,500 mAh battery. Because the screen is an IPS LCD, the quality is definitely a step-above your run-of-the-mill TFT-LCD mainstays, although it’s hard to ignore the low-res image quality. The Hydro also offers 512MB of RAM, 2GB of built-in storage and a 2GB microSD card. In terms of connectivity, you’ll find 802.11n (WiFi), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and EV-DO Rev. A. The handset itself is comfortable to hold, though its plasticky build materials reinforce the fact that it’s a low-end handset. While the Hydro doesn’t blaze any new trails, it may very well be suitable for those on a budget who’d like a phone that can handle life’s accidents. Follow the break for our hands-on video.

Twitpic for iPhone brings four years of image-sharing history, one year too late

Having become a staple for 35 million life-observing extroverts already, Twitpic has suddenly decided to launch itself into the world of iOS apps. You may justifiably question the point of yet another platform for sharing photos and videos over Twitter, given how well the official app, Instagram and others now handle such things. But then you’d be missing out on a community that has been steadily growing since even before mobile photography took off, and whose visual ramblings are actually much funnier and more amazing than even the brightest shots of the Dutch skyline.

Nvidia Levels Up With New Gaming Graphics Card

A new video card from Nvidia or competitor AMD isn’t usually all that newsworthy, but when the latest card arrives with eight Graphics Processing Clusters, and a total of 4 GB of GDDR5 video memory that runs at 6.008 GHz over two 256-bit memory, that is enough for hard-core enthusiasts to take pause. For everyone else, the release of a video card that carries a price point just under $1,000 will certainly draw attention.

Gogo grabs 1MHz spectrum from JetBlue subsidiary LiveTV, beefs up in-flight bandwidth

Gogo grabs 1MHz spectrum from JetBlue subsidiary LiveTV, beefs up its in-flight bandwidthIn-flight internet provider Gogo’s been increasing its domestic presence of late, so it makes sense for the company to snag some additional spectrum as well. Its new wireless license is for a chunk of 1 MHz spectrum that Gogo got from Live TV, the subsidiary of JetBlue that handles all of that airline’s in-air entertainment and communications services. Gogo’s new spectrum will augment its existing Air-to-Ground network here in the US — pending FCC approval, of course — and provide road (sky?) warriors with a bit more bandwidth once above 10,000 feet. For all you jet-setters, we should mention that your Gulfstream’s Airfone bill will be going to Gogo from now on, as LiveTV tossed the venerable voice service in the deal, too.

Alau.me Wants To Fix iOS Marketing With Bit.ly-Like Links And More

alau-mePeople are always complaining about the difficulty of getting found in the Apple App Store. A new startup called Alau.me (pronounced “allow me”) is trying to tackle the problem through a app referral tracking. Co-founder Brian Sabino says the team has built iOS apps itself, and it found that the current app advertising and promotional system is broken for most developers, with the cost of a download often exceeding the revenue or value that it might bring to the company. So it’s time for developers to start exploring other promotional channels, with help from Alau.me.

Save your tabs and Panorama tab groups in Firefox 4

Firefox 4 save tabs

When Firefox 4′s tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4′s final release — but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you’ve used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla’s new browser doesn’t always save your tab groupings when you close the browser — a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the ‘Save and Quit’ dialog box — and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type ‘quit’ into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That’s it — now you’ll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.

VAIO T13 Ultrabook could be coming with Ivy Bridge, according to Sony's German site

If Sony’s German site is to be believed, then it’s safe to say the outfit’s had a change of heart recently. According to a revealing spec sheet on the website, there’s now a T13 Ultrabook model with one of Intel’s latest chips on board. Just last week, Sony announced the Euro-bound T13 would be sporting a last-gen Core i3-2367M CPU, but the recent finding shows an i5-3317U variant (you know, the one on Sammy’s Series 9) could be in the works. Still, it’s unknown whether this Ivy Bridge-packing VAIO would replace its Sandy Bridge sibling or if it’s just going to be a complete different offering. We’ll have to wait and see.

Sand Trap

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you’re hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn’t even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it’s highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don’t need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There’s a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that’s it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don’t miss out on this one!

Switched On: Competing by hook or by Nook

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Microsoft has a long history of supporting bitter rivals — even those that have long publicly disparaged the company, offering funds to Nokia, Corel and, most famously, Apple. It also has a long history of supporting e-reading. Prior to ending development last year, the company offered its Microsoft Reader software for about a decade — first on handheld devices using Windows CE and Windows Mobile and later on desktop Windows. Those two traditions intersected yesterday as Microsoft invested in a new Nook e-book business designed to compete better against Apple and especially Amazon.com.

Classic Shell now makes Internet Explorer 9 look like IE8

classic shell make windows 7 look like xp
If you used Windows XP for a long time (who didn’t?), one of the biggest changes when moving to Windows 7 or Vista was the massively-altered Explorer. While the new Explorer introduces some useful new features, it also removed just as many — which is where Classic Shell comes in!

We’ve covered Classic Shell before, but here’s the crib note: Classic Shell restores almost every Windows XP-era Explorer feature. The best change, in our opinion, is the reemergence of the ‘up’ arrow, meaning you now navigate without using the Windows Vista/7 ‘breadcrumbs’ address bar. The status bar yet again shows the total size of your selection, and — praise be! — the diabolical Windows 7 Copy File ‘copy and replace?’ dialog has been replaced with a Windows XP lookalike (image after the break).

New to the most recent version of Classic Shell is the ability to make IE9 look like IE8. With Classic Shell the title bar yet again has a caption, so you can see the full title of Web pages. The current security zone and loading progress indicator have been put back into the status bar, too. If you enable ‘Show tabs on a separate row,’ it’s almost like using IE8.

Finally, Classic Shell replaces the omnipotent Windows 7 Start Menu with the age-old ‘classic’ Windows 2000/XP-style Start Menu. Classic Shell makes the Start Menu skinable, too, if you’re into the kind of thing.

As awesome as it sounds, we’ve only touched on a small section of Classic Shell’s feature set. Check the Classic Shell site for a complete list. There’s a few more images of Classic Shell in action after the break.

Nokia PureView 808 pops up at the FCC, has innards splayed across the internet

Nokia PureView 808 pops up at the FCC, gets its innards splayed across the internet

‘Twas only a matter of time, we suppose, before Uncle Sam got his mitts on Nokia’s mobile imaging monster, the 808 Pureview, and that time is now. The folks at the FCC got a real good look at the Symbian handset sporting a 41-megapixel shooter, and have torn it asunder to ensure it’s safe for human use. Before you go thinking that this visit to the FCC means that the 808′s coming to American carriers, recall that Nokia’s already nixed that idea. That said, if you’re like us, that won’t deter you from wanting to check out the drool-inducing pics of its innards in our gallery below. And, naturally, there’s all the electromagnetic measurements you can handle at the source link.

HBO Go and Max Go get Android 4.0 phone support, skip tablets for now

HBO Go and Max Go

Those with Android 4.0 phones like the HTC One X have been left out of watching HBO Go and Max Go on the road so far. New updates to the respective mobile apps take care of that: either premium channel will now stream directly to a phone running Google’s latest OS (assuming you’re subscribed to pay-TV, that is). Speed-ups and bug fixes are in the upgrades, too. Oddly, Android 4.0 tablets have yet to make the leap, ruling out your Transformer Pad TF300 for catching up on episodes of True Blood.

Chain-Link Confidentiality: A HIPAA-Like Approach To Online Privacy

chain_link_linksAs we put more of our private information online and entrust it to web services, privacy breaches become almost inevitable. One major problem with online privacy is that there is really no enforceable chain of confidentiality. So when a third-party service makes your information available to another party, things can get complicated. A new paper by Samford University law professor Woodrow Harzog argues that traditional privacy laws aren’t the best ways to protect private information online. Instead, he suggests an approach that more like the U.S. HIPAA rules that currently govern how private health information can be shared between your health provider and third parties. The system he proposes would be based on established principles in confidentiality and contract law.

Series revisits ARM's humble beginnings, BBC Micro and all

If you read our interview with ARM co-founder John Biggs, you know the company behind the processor in most smartphones had quite modest beginnings, what with an office in a barn and all. But Biggs is only part of the story, and Reghardware fleshes the rest out with a two-part series on the “unsung heroes of tech”: Sophie Wilson, Steve Furber and Herman Hauser, the team behind Acorn Computers, the British PC company that spawned ARM in the mid-80s. We’ll let you click through to the source links to take the journey yourself, but here are a few highlights: earning a computer contract with the BBC, happening upon ARM chips’ low power consumption by accident and striking gold thanks to a partnership with Apple.

Shot Shot Pirate is a fun, simple physics game

shotshotpirate

Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you’re cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It’s not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks – it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it’s gone, you lose. But don’t worry! If you don’t make it on the first try, it’s very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it’s a cute game. I’ve seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise – a few minutes of pure time wasting!

CERN scientists explain what would happen if you put your hand in the LHC’s beam (video)

CERN scientists explain what would happen if you put your hand in the LHC's beam (video)

Sure, concerns about the Large Hadron Collider creating a world-destroying black hole may have been more or less put to rest, but there’s still plenty of pressing questions that remain unanswered. Like, what would happen if you put your hand in the beam? The folks from Sixty Symbols recently asked some physicists that very question and got some rather puzzled responses, so they went straight to CERN itself to get a definitive answer. You can see that in full after the break, but the short version is that it’s something like the force of a moving aircraft carrier concentrated down to a laser-like one-millimeter-wide beam (accompanied by a wider beam of particles that would irradiate your entire body). Bad news. As they’re quick to point out, though, actually getting anywhere near the beam is virtually impossible.

Xamarin’s XobotOS opens prospect of Android port to C#, can of worms

Xamarin-XobotOS-ports-Android-to-C-Sharp

Would it be ironic if Android developers did an end-run around Microsoft patents by using Microsoft’s own C#? Or if Google kiboshed its Oracle brouhaha with the aid of none other than Redmond? We’re asking because Xamarin, the wacky open source implementer of .NET, has ported Android to Microsoft’s C# with its XobotOS project. Although just an experiment and unlikely to solve Google’s issues, the team showed that running the robot on C# instead of Java gave fewer coding limitations, better battery life and direct graphics access. Additionally, Xamarin reports “massive” speed gains on its HTC Flyer and Acer Iconia when running the side-project port — no surprise given C#’s machine heritage. Sure, it’s pure speculation that Mountain View and its developers would ever change their Java MO, but a little patent relief and faster Android devices in one kill shot? That’s a sweet idea.
